A familiar yet different triple camera setup

A cursory look at the Xiaomi 15T reveals several similarities with the Xiaomi 14T in the camera department. While that might be the case on some level, digging a bit deeper reveals that Xiaomi has rearranged some camera sensors for the new generation.

The main camera on the 15T is no longer based on a Sony sensor like the one on the 14T, but rather uses an Omnivision OV50 ‘Light Hunter’ 800 sensor. It is a modern sensor that measures 1/1.55″ in diagonal with 1.00 µm individual pixels. It sits behind an f/1.7 lens with OIS. There is also PDAF on board.

Moving on to the telephoto camera. It is once again a 2x optical zoom unit like last year. The sensor behind the telephoto has been upgraded from the Samsung ISOCELL JN1 to the JN5, otherwise known as the S5KJN5. It is a 1/2.76″ part with 0.64µm pixels, positioned behind an f/1.9 lens with PDAF. Again, like last year, there is no OIS for this camera.

  • Wide (main): 50MP Omnivision OV50 Light Hunter 800, f/1.7, 1/1.55″, 23mm, 1.0µm PDAF, OIS; 2160p@60fps
  • Telephoto 2x: 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN5 (S5KJN5), f/1.9, 1/2.76″, 50mm, 0.64µm; 2160p@60fps.
  • Ultra wide angle: 12MP OmniVision OV13B (OV13B10), f/2.2, 1/3″, 15mm, 1.12µm; 2160p@30fps
  • Front camera: 32MP Samsung KD1 (S5KKD1), 1/3.44″, (0.64µm-1.28µm), f/2.0, 25mm, fixed focus; 4K@30fps

Next, we have the ultrawide. It seems to be lifted straight from last year’s Xiaomi 14T. Although it is advertised as a 12MP snapper, it actually utilizes a 13MP OmniVision OV13B sensor. It is a 1/3″ sensor with 1.12µm individual pixels. The ultrawide lacks any fancy extras, such as autofocus.

Finally, we have the selfie camera, which poses a bit of a mystery. It is being marketed as a 32MP unit, and indeed, it captures photos at approximately 32MP resolution. However, in software, the phone reports that it supports an OmniVision OV20B 20MP selfie cam, which has to be a mistake. Best we can figure, the selfie sensor is unchanged from the Xiaomi 14T and is the Samsung KD1 with a 1/3.44″ diagonal and 0.64µm pixel size.

But sensors and optics aren’t everything these days. The Xiaomi 15T benefits from Xiaomi’s latest Xiaomi AISP 2.0 pipeline for better computational photography, as well as color and tonal accuracy.

Just like its predecessor, the Xiaomi 15T supports the universal Ultra HDR standard for JPEGs like some Samsung and Pixel phones do. Photos taken with the 15T will pop with HDR in the native HyperOS gallery and on other people’s galleries that support the Ultra HDR standard.

Xiaomi 15T review

Just like on numerous other Xiaomi phones, the 15T and 15T Pro have two main presets and either one is applied to all photos you take – Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant. The latter tends to produce pictures with livelier colors, while the Leica Authentic applies a subtle vignette effect, adds a bit of extra contrast, and favors more conservative color reproduction. All of the photos in the review were taken with the default Leica Vibrant profile enabled.

Daylight photo quality

Main camera

Let’s start with the main 50MP camera. It captures some very competent shots in right around 12.5MP resolution. The detail is great, even when you pixel-peep. Details like fine foliage and grass are expertly rendered, with just a hint of artificial sharpening applied tastefully. The colors look great, too.

The contrast could be higher across all cameras – the photos appear a bit hazy. Some highlights are occasionally clipped as well, but nothing major.

The Xiaomi 15T is good at shooting people. Subjects come out with pleasant skin tones. The quality of the background blur in Portrait mode is also very good, and so is the subject detection and separation.

You can force the main camera to capture in its full 50MP resolution. The resulting photos don’t look any better, so we would probably skip using the high-resolution mode in most scenarios.

Telephoto camera

At 2x optical, the telephoto camera might not offer a long tele reach, but the photos it captures are very clean and detailed. They have excellent contrast and colors. Again, dynamic range could be a bit better, but that’s mostly nitpicking.

Since the Xiaomi 15T Pro can achieve 5x optical zoom with its telephoto lens, we decided to take a few 5x digital zoom shots with the non-pro model as well. These are quite soft and fuzzy, however and you might want to look into the 15T Pro if you value the longer zoom reach.

Ultrawide camera

The ultrawide camera is probably the weakest link in the camera chain here. Not that it is bad or anything, but we can’t expect particularly good results from the hardware at hand to begin with. Having said that, the Xiaomi 15T squeezes the most it can from the sensor, producing decently sharp and detailed shots with nice colors and a surprisingly wide dynamic range.

Honesty, the Xiaomi 15T performs well with the hardware it is equipped with. We only wish the ultrawide had autofocus so it could double as a macro shooter, since the telephoto can’t focus up close either.

Selfie camera

The selfies are nothing to call home about. Xiaomi has been using the same 32MP selfie camera for a while, and it outputs unbinned images at its native resolution. We are not fans of the image quality – the selfies don’t look particularly good.

Low-light camera quality

In low-light conditions, the detail is very good. Light sources are also very well contained. Both shadows and highlights are well developed.

Xiaomi has discontinued including any manual night mode settings in the camera app. It all works automatically and quite well.

The 2x zoom camera also holds its own well in low-light conditions. The detail is great. There is a slight softness to the surfaces compared to the main camera, but it’s not too severe.

The ultrawide camera expectedly struggles more than the other two rear cameras at night, but still manages to produce usable results. The detail isn’t half bad, colors look good, but there is quite a bit of softness on surfaces. Dynamic range seems solid for this type of camera.

Video capture quality

The Xiaomi 15T can capture videos at up to 4K@60fps on its main and telephoto cameras. The ultrawide is limited to 4K@30fps. By default, the phone captures videos with a HEVC/h.265 video stream to save on some space at the same quality level. If you prefer, you can switch to the older AVC/h.264 format for improved compatibility.

At 4K@30fps in h.264, you get a video stream of around 50Mbps, plus a stereo AAC audio stream, packaged inside a standard MP4 container.

You can check out the playlist below, which includes multiple video samples.

Quality-wise, the main camera is excellent, offering plenty of fine detail, vibrant colors, good contrast, and a wide dynamic range. The telephoto camera shares the same excellent characteristics, but is slightly softer, as expected. In good lighting, videos from the ultrawide are surprisingly good as well, with a lot of detail and minimal noise.

Not surprisingly, the main camera performs well in low-light conditions as well. The same goes for the telephoto. The ultrawide struggles a lot in low light. We would probably shy away from using it unless really necessary.

The Xiaomi 15T features stabilization at every resolution across all its cameras. Additionally, there is a ShootSteady mode that limits the resolution to 1080p, providing even better stabilization, but we are not sure what it adds. The regular video stabilization is already plenty good in our view.
