When Apple announced the ultra-thin iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 series, many were concerned that the Air could do a repeat of the iPhone 6’s infamous ‘bendgate’ scandal. Luckily, so far, no videos have emerged showing that the iPhone Air is prone to bending. Rather, Apple might be facing an entirely different problem altogether, which social media has started to refer to as the ‘scratchgate.’

This year, Apple switched back from titanium to aluminium for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. The pro models get an aluminium unibody with a ceramic shield backplate. The return to aluminium was expected to allow for better thermal efficiency alongside the first-ever vapour cooling chamber in an iPhone.

However, early buyers have flooded social media with images of scratches in their new iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Many users are spotting marks on the aluminium unibody of their devices within a couple of days of usage.

Why are iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max prone to scratches

That’s not all. According to YouTube channel, JerryRigEverything, while the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max do not bend, the devices are particularly susceptible to scratches.

This is likely due to the anodisation process in manufacturing. The new camera plateau and edges of the iPhone 17 Pro models seem to be the most prone to such wear and tear. However, the glass backplate does not seem to face this amount of scratches.

According to Bloomberg, the demo units of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max showed scratches within hours of being put on display in New York and Hong Kong. Apple’s MagSafe charging also seemingly left visible circular imprints on the devices.

The flagship Cosmic Orange colour of the iPhone 17 Pro is reportedly the most prone to wear and tear. While the scratches are least visible on the Silver shade, it is said.

The black iPhone Air also showed similar wear and tear. However, user complaints have mostly been focused on the Pro models. Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone Air has a titanium frame with a glass back. Apple hasn’t released a statement on this yet.
