HMD may be toying with the idea of launching a range of smarter phones taking inspiration from the Nokia Asha phones of the yore. Leaked images posted by a trustworthy long-time Nokia/HMD enthusiast show the uncanny similarity between 1) a Lumia & Asha inspired phone codenamed Wonka 2) HMD Compass and its brethren and Nokia Asha phones of the past.

First the HMD Wonka phone inspired by both Asha and Lumia designs.

Now, the HMD Compass compared to a real Nokia Asha phone.

Hikari Calyx has not only posted images of the HMD Compass prototypes but also a video on YouTube. The video gives an idea about the design and UI of the Nokia Asha reborn with Lumia design.

In another tweet Hikari also revealed that known TA codes for this HMD Wonka are TA-1692, TA-1712 and TA-1720.

Nokia Asha was a Nokia’s smarter phone project that was also killed when Elop had sent the infamous memo announcing death to Nokia X range of smartphones. Another internal memo had simultaneously announced Nokia Asha phones to be put in maintenance mode leading to its ultimate demise.

In an internal memo circulated by newly made Microsoft phone business head Jo Harlow, all the efforts now be focused on Windows Phone and Nokia X, Asha and Feature phones will be put in “maintenance mode” for an eventual shut down of services during the period of next 18 months. There will be no new features or updates for these platforms and developer engagement will be ramped down.
