A potent triple camera setup

The X Fold5 has quite the camera pedigree to live up to. The X Fold3 Pro is one of the phones that prove the foldable form factor does not require major camera sacrifices. The X Fold5 takes camera hardware just as seriously.

The main camera is still quite large, although the Sony IMX921 sensor is slightly smaller overall compared to the OmniVision OV50H used in the vivo X Fold3 Pro. That said, it features VCS 2.0 noise reduction technology and a CIPA4.5 OIS stabilization rating. It sits behind an f/1.57 lens, which is brighter than last year.

The ultrawide camera is borrowed straight from last year’s X Fold3 Pro. It is based on the 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor and features phase detection autofocus, so it can double as a macro shooter.

  • Wide (main): 50MP Sony IMX921 f/1.57, 23mm, 1/1.56″, 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS; 8K@30fps, 2160p@60fps
  • Ultra wide angle: 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 1/2.76″, 0.64µ, f/2.32, 15mm, PDAF; 4K@60fps
  • Telephoto: 50MP Sony IMX882, f/2.55, 1/1.95″, 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS; 4K@60fps.
  • Front cameras (both): 20 MP OmniVision OV32D, f/2.4, 1/3.6″, 0.7µm; 1080p@30fps

That said, you will probably want to take macros with the telephoto, which does have the ability to focus up close (15cm). The telephoto is definitely upgraded this year. The 64MP OmniVision OV64B has been swapped for a 50MP Sony IMX882. With a 1/1.95″ diagonal, it is a bit bigger, but more importantly, so are the 0.8 µm individual pixels. Bigger pixels and a brighter f/2.55 lens aperture theoretically equate to around a 33% increase in overall light intake.

Furthermore, the X Fold3 Pro’s telephoto only used around 3% of its pixels to autofocus. In contrast, the new telephoto on the X Fold5 supports full-pixel phase detection autofocus (PDAF). Vivo also states that the telephoto lens applies AIGC-generated textures to significantly enhance clarity at high zoom ratios.

The X Fold5 offers most, if not all, of the benefits of the bendy form factor when it comes to camera functionality. You can now take selfies with the rear cameras while using the cover screen as a viewfinder – something that wasn’t possible last year.

vivo X Fold5 review

The flexibility of the two hinged parts allows for waist-level shooting, and you could also do overhead shots. Only, by default, the Smart Screen Shift feature will intervene. For shots with the phone above your head and the cameras facing away, towards a stage, for example, it will switch to the cover display, and the foldable screen will black out. Turn Smart screen shift off, and you’ll be good to go.

Daylight photo quality

Main camera

The main camera on the X Fold5 captures binned photos at a default resolution of just over 12.5MP. These look decent, but aren’t particularly impressive. Frankly, vivo seems to have downgraded the main camera compared to last year’s Pro model.

The detail is good, and so are the colors, but the dynamic range is quite limited. Large, uniform areas, such as white patches and the sky, are frequently clipped; darker areas are often crushed.

You can force the main camera to capture in its full 50MP resolution, but don’t expect any major differences in quality. Yes, you do get a bit more fine detail and less processing and sharpening on a pixel level, but nothing major. The dynamic range remains an issue.

Telephoto camera

The dedicated 3x telephoto camera captures pretty detailed shots. The colors look great and are well-matched to the main camera. However, dynamic range is still an issue. Highlights tend to get clipped, darker areas crushed.

Full resolution photos from the main camera aren’t too different. Once again, you get slightly softer shots with less processing, which is mostly visible at a pixel level. Details aren’t any better, nor is the dynamic range.

The vivo X Fold5 has a 10x zoom toggle right in its main camera UI. These shots were taken with the telephoto camera and, frankly, look more like AI reimagining than actual photos. On the surface, they look just fine, but look a bit closer and anything like text and numbers is reduced to gibberish.

Portrait shots

The vivo X Fold5 captures portraits with both its main camera and telephoto. You can never be quite sure which camera produces which shots just by looking at them, since portrait mode uses mm designation and none of the mm toggles actually match any of the toggles in the main photo mode. For the record, 35mm and 50mm portraits are captured with the main camera, while 85mm and 100mm are shot with the telephoto lens.

Quality tends to fluctuate significantly from one portrait shot to the next. We definitely like the ones from the telephoto better. These tend to have more skin texture coming through. Granted, this could be a byproduct of the simple fact that they tend to capture the subject from a closer distance. Again, we wish the cameras handled dynamic range better.

Ultrawide camera

The 50MP ultrawide does alright, but frankly, we expected more from it. Looked at from a distance, the shots are decent, but take a closer look and you will definitely notice the softness, especially near the edges. There is plenty of noise too. At least the colors look good even if they are not terribly well-matched to the other cameras. Dynamic range remains an issue.

Once again, the 50MP mode is slightly less processed, and the shots are slightly softer, but with no obvious benefits in terms of detail.

Selfie camera

The vivo X Fold5 has two 20MP selfie cameras. Or at least they are being marketed and used as 20MP shooters. Under the hood, they actually use the 32MP OmniVision OV32D sensor. While the two selfies use the same exact hardware, their quality is definitely not identical.

The cover display selfie has much better detail and contrast with livelier colors. Skin tones look good, and there is plenty of skin texture coming through.

In contrast, the inside selfie cam produces softer shots with much worse contrast and dynamic range. Skin texture is almost entirely absent.

Low-light camera quality

The main camera captures solid low-light photos. The detail is good, even if a bit artificially sharpened. Colors look good, and so does contrast. The dynamic range could be a bit better, but HDR stacking enhances darker areas nicely. Light sources are mostly handled well.

The X Fold5 has a special Landscape and Night shooting mode. It incorporates several features in one, including long exposure and light trails, various filters, and a special Moon capture mode. You get some control over what gets triggered, and you can adjust certain aspects like the capture time for night mode photos. That said, the regular night mode is automatic in nature and also triggers properly from the normal photo shooting mode. Hence, we noticed no real difference when we captured using the Landscape and Night shooting mode.

At 2x zoom, photos from the main camera are slightly softer but otherwise quite similar to those at 1x zoom.

Telephoto shots from the 3x camera are quite clean and sharp; however, there are clear signs of oversharpening. Additionally, for some reason, light sources exhibit a peculiar fringing effect. We aren’t quite sure what is causing this effect. It almost resembles light refraction, similar to what you would see from under-display cameras.

The ultrawide camera struggles noticeably in low light. The detail isn’t all that bad, but there is softness all throughout the frame. Light sources are also blown out.

Finally, we have the selfie cameras. Interestingly enough, when the light level is really low, we tend to prefer the results from the inside camera more. Presumably, that’s because the screen flash feature works better on the larger inner display, providing more light. That said, neither selfie camera is particularly impressive in low light.

Video capture quality

All the rear cameras on the vivo X Fold5 can capture 4K@60fps, which is rather impressive. The main camera can also capture 8K@30, although 8K, especially on a mobile phone, is still more of a gimmick than anything else. Still, it is there if you need it.

The two selfie cameras are limited to 1080p@30fps. By default, 4K video is captured in an HEVC/H. 265 video stream of approximately 50 Mbps, along with a stereo AAC audio stream, all within an MP4 container. Of course, you can fall back to AVC/h.264 for better compatibility, if that is your desire.

You can check out the playlist below, which includes multiple video samples.

Quality-wise, the main camera is good, but nothing to phone home about. The detail is decent, but could be improved. Colors look good, but there is fine noise all throughout the frame. Contrast and dynamic range are far from ideal as well.

At 2x zoom, the problems are naturally exacerbated further. Still, these clips are usable.

Videos from the telephoto camera are pretty clean. Not exactly overly sharp, as fine detail could be improved, but there appears to be no noise, unlike on the main camera. Dynamic range is a pain point yet again.

Ultrawide videos are also clean with quite a bit of detail. Noise is only really visible near the edges of the frame and in busier areas – more shimmering than anything else.

Unsurprisingly, the stabilization on the main camera meets the CIPA 4.5 rating and is very steady. Additionally, there is a HyperSteady mode that incorporates EIS, which limits the resolution to 1080p. We don’t really think it adds enough stability to merit the loss of resolution and detail.
