It goes without saying that the use of smart devices is at an all-time high. Many of us can be labelled “smartphone addicts” and this league comprises youngsters as well as people over 60, who are addicted to watching videos, movies and endlessly surfing the internet. The downside of this phenomenon: eye strain and physical/mental fatigue. Phones with a larger screen size further aggravate this problem, especially on account of prolonged use.  No wonder, handset makers are introducing compact and lightweight devices. The reasons are clear: such phones offer better portability, are easier to carry and use with one hand. Plus, they tend to feel more premium as well.

OnePlus is the latest to join this  trend. A highly-awaited device, OnePlus 13s is their first compact flagship that comes with a sleek, flat frame and rounded corners, all packed into a lightweight body (185g). The size feels great in hand and the weight is well-balanced. OnePlus folks have done a good job in keeping the handset’s footprint small without sacrificing power.

The OnePlus 13s has a 6.32-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 2640 x 1216 resolution and 1-120Hz refresh rate support. Visuals are sharp and vibrant with good brightness levels. There is smooth scrolling and easy viewing even in direct sunlight. Watching HDR content is a delight here, especially when streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform that enhances everyday running through its advanced architecture and powerful AI engine. For a user, this means faster processing speeds, improved power efficiency and smoother user experiences. There is a 5,850mAh single-cell graphite battery with 80W SUPERVOOC charging, good enough to last two days of moderate use.

Talking about the AI features, there is AI Call Assistant, which offers call summarisation and multi-language translation, while AI VoiceScribe extends these features to apps like WhatsApp and Zoom. There’s also a new AI Translation app, which other than doing basic translations, can also be run on top of other apps so it can translate the text on screen or the audio currently playing.

Another  standout is the Plus Key, a big advancement from the earlier Alert Slider that allows users to create shortcuts for functions like screenshots, flashlight, camera, voice recording and switching between ring, vibrate, or silent modes. It can also be utilised for triggering Plus Mind, a new AI feature that enhances memory management by allowing users to store and retrieve content.

OnePlus phones are known for their strong camera capabilities and the OnePlus 13s carries this reputation forward. It gets a dual-camera setup – a 50MP wide camera as well as a 50MP 2x telephoto camera. The front snapper is a 32 megapixel. Photos and video captured have a good amount of detail and vibrant colours with punchy contrast, making it a capable camera phone.

Overall, the OnePlus 13s is feature rich and a well-rounded phone. Despite being small, it doesn’t lack in the power department. Hence, a strong recommendation.
