Significant changes are set to take effect in India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem from August 1, as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) rolls out revised operational guidelines aimed at improving efficiency, managing system load, and enhancing digital payment security.
The updated rules, which will be implemented across all UPI-enabled applications such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and others, include new restrictions on balance checks, auto-debit transactions, account linking, and transaction status queries.
Key Changes for UPI Users
1. Balance Check Limit
Users will be allowed to check their bank balance only 50 times per day per UPI app. According to the NPCI, one of the most notable changes will be a cap of 50 balance enquiries per day per UPI app. The restriction is designed to reduce API load during peak hours.
If a user reaches the cap, further balance checks will be blocked for 24 hours on that particular app.
2. Auto-Balance Display
After every successful UPI transaction, the available balance will be displayed automatically, reducing the need for repeated manual checks.
3. Account Linking Cap
A user can now link up to 25 bank accounts per day on a single UPI app. This applies to fetching bank account details using a mobile number, limiting account retrieval requests to better control traffic across banking APIs.
4. Transaction Status Checks Restricted
Users will be allowed to check the status of a pending transaction only three times. Each attempt must have a mandatory 90-second gap.
5. Auto-Debit Window Restricted
Another important update involves auto-debit mandates such as monthly subscriptions, EMIs, or investment instalments. These scheduled payments will now be processed only during non-peak hours to streamline high-volume transactional windows.
Recurring payments (EMIs, OTT subscriptions, mutual fund SIPs) will now be processed only during non-peak hours:
-
Before 10:00 AM
-
After 9:30 PM
6. Payee Name Visibility
Before money is transferred, UPI apps must display the registered name of the payee as recorded with their bank.
Additional Restrictions and Compliance
The new NPCI directive also places a cap on retrieving account information to 25 times per day per app.
Additionally, checking the status of a pending transaction will now be limited to three attempts per transaction, with a mandatory 90-second gap between each query.
To improve transparency and security, users will be shown the registered name of the account holder before transferring money, helping to prevent accidental or fraudulent transfers.
All UPI service providers have been instructed to fully integrate these changes into their apps by July 31, and the new rules will be enforced starting August 1. The NPCI has issued a warning that non-compliance could invite disciplinary action.
