Triple setup on the back, unusual selfie camera

Compact phones tend to come with serious tradeoffs in the camera department, and the X200 FE is not without its share of compromises, but it still packs quite an appealing set of cameras. At a passing glance, it’s a mix-and-match job of bits already seen on other vivos, but more careful examination reveals a few subtle differences.

The main camera uses the same sensor that you’d find on the regular X200, but the FE gets a slightly dimmer lens (f/1.88 vs. f/1.57). That shouldn’t have an all too pronounced effect on the experience, we reckon.

The telephoto is just like the one on the X200, but not really. In the pursuit of compactness, vivo has swapped out the ‘regular’ periscope of the X200 for an M-style prism. In that process, the telephoto has lost some of its close-focusing capability – the X200 FE’s zoom camera doesn’t focus closer than 55cm (14cm on the X200).

vivo X200 FE review

The 8MP ultrawide camera almost feels like a deliberate decision to limit the FE’s appeal so it doesn’t jeopardize the sales of the other models in the lineup. Though, on the other hand, it could be motivated again by packaging and internal design in order to meet a certain goal of pocketability and/or looks.

vivo X200 FE review

On the flipside is the selfie camera, the 50MP unit sounding familiar from the X100 Ultra and the X200 Ultra. You’d be forgiven to assume it’s the same one, but you’d be wrong – while the sensor is indeed the same, the lens is now wider at around 20mm equivalent and has an f/2.0 aperture (24mm f/2.4 on the Ultras). This new setup still has autofocus, possibly making it a contender for the best selfie camera hardware award.

Daylight photo quality

Main camera

The X200 FE’s main camera captures excellent photos in daylight. They have great dynamic range and dependable auto white balance with pleasing levels of color saturation. Detail is very nicely rendered too, including random textures, and there’s no noise to speak of.

As already mentioned, you’ll also appreciate this camera’s 85mm minimum focusing distance as it’s going to be your best tool for closeups on the X200 FE.

When it came to photos of people, we had a bit of an unusual experience with the X200 FE. It took more deliberation and some waiting in-between shots to get the phone to do its HDR magic reliably. Somehow, the rapid-fire approach we often use (generally successfully on most phones) didn’t sit well with the FE. And it was prevalent across all zoom levels, too. Oddly enough, that was the case with photos of people specifically – we didn’t observe that behavior with the regular samples.

Anyway, if you don’t fire a dozen shots in quick succession, you’ll very likely get really nice photos of people, whether in Photo mode or in Portrait mode.

The telephoto is also great for taking pictures of people – the focal length allows for comfortable subject distance, and the perspective is a lot more flattering. We’re not sure why the Portrait mode can’t be at the native 70-ish mm focal length and why a 100mm zoom level is necessary at all, but that’s just how vivo does portraits.

The 10x shortcut in the viewfinder does stretch the telephoto’s capabilities beyond its comfort levels and these photos have a distinctly artificial look when examined from up close, but at fit-to-screen viewing, they look quite alright still, particularly if the scene is more straight lines and less foliage.

Ultrawide camera

The ultrawide camera isn’t going to win any awards – its shots aren’t particularly sharp, even as 8MP ultrawides go. The lack of autofocus is also limiting its usefulness with nearby subjects. We’re still liking the colors and dynamic range, so not all is lost.

Selfies

While it may be challenged on the ultrawide end on the back, the X200 FE is pretty awesome when it comes to selfies, almost ultrawide ones too. The 20mm native focal length ensures plenty of coverage (at 0.8x zoom in the viewfinder), detail is excellent, and the autofocus capability means you can get goofy closeups. Colors are a little muted for our liking, though.

Ultrawide camera

The ultrawide’s results weren’t particularly impressive during the day, and they get sketchier still once it gets dark – these photos are pretty soft. Exposures and dynamic range remain very good though, and colors are mostly fine if a little washed out at times.

Video recording

The X200 FE can record video up to 4K60 with the main and telephoto camera on the back, as well as the selfie camera. The ultrawide is capped at 1080p30. The Pro video mode also allows 24fps, 25fps, and 50fps recording, if you’re into those things.

The default codec is h.265, but you can switch to h.264. There’s no Dolby Vision capture like you’d find on the X200 Pro or the Ultra.

There’s always-on electronic video stabilization in all resolutions and frame rate mode, plus an ‘Ultra stabilization’ mode that only works on the main camera at up to 1080p60.

You can check out the playlist below, which includes multiple video samples.

The X200 FE’s video quality isn’t exactly class leading, but it’s not too bad either. The main camera and the telephoto are very similar in their rendition and their detail processing is pretty heavy on the sharpening and looks quite artificial. Dynamic range and color are very good though. The ultrawide’s basic 1080p capability delivers basic results.

In the dark, the main camera and the telephoto capture good footage, with the ultrawide’s clips being pretty soft and noisy.

Stabilization is generally great on the X200 FE. There’s occasional leftover shake from walking, but that’s all that we can think of – panning is smooth on all cameras and all cameras capture steady footage when you’re just standing in one spot.
