Researchers have predicted that 6G connectivity could officially arrive in 2030, with the possibility that its deployment happens as early as 2028, meaning that telecommunication firms in China and the U.S. are making ‘trial and error’ runs to ensure that the wireless standard functions as expected by delivering performance that is leaps and bounds beyond 5G’s threshold. In the latest milestone achieved by China Mobile in a small-scale test, the country’s largest wireless carrier showed that it is possible to download a 50GB file in just 1.4 seconds.

The world’s first small-scale 6G test network has been launched by China Mobile, and it has a total of 10 sites dedicated towards further research

With China Mobile’s R&D expenditure reaching 39.1 billion yuan, or $5.46 billion, MyDrivers reports that the carrier made a breakthrough announcement during the 2025 China Internet Conference. The company has apparently taken the lead in four major national scientific and technological projects, and has formed the top ten 6G technologies.

Additionally, in its pilot verification, China Mobile has launched the world’s first small-scale 6G network, and has deployed a total of 10 sites for further research. In the latest demonstration, China Mobile showed that 6G is capable of speeds of 280Gbps, making it 14 times faster than the maximum theoretical bandwidth attainable by 5G. With these speeds, a 50GB file can be downloaded in less than 2 seconds, putting even wired connection speeds to shame.

The aforementioned record is equivalent to transmitting a 2-hour 4K Blu-ray quality movie every two seconds. In February of last year, China Mobile launched the first satellite capable of transmitting data at exceptionally high speeds. The satellite operates at an orbit height of just 500 kilometers, allowing it to optimize data transfer throughput at low latency. Other satellites, which circulate the earth at a height of 36,000 kilometers, cannot achieve the same bandwidth.
