Delhi Drifts into Unusual Summer as Power Demand Hits Record High
Delhi is grappling with an intense summer, characterized by record-high power demand, unusual for this time of the year. The city’s residents are experiencing a sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring to 41 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal. As the heatwave conditions and warm nights persist, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a partly cloudy sky with a possible thunderstorm on Thursday, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.
The unseasonal heatwave has left residents reeling, with power demand hitting an all-time high. According to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the demand for electricity has reached an astonishing 5,500 MW, exceeding the usual summer peak by 1,500 MW.
The heatwave conditions are expected to continue, with the IMD predicting partly cloudy skies and warm nights for the next few days. The Delhi government has550219, directed authorities to ensure adequate supply of water and power to residents. With temperatures expected to remain high, the government has also set up a rapid response team to monitor the situation and provide relief to affected areas.

The government’s efforts to alleviate the sufferings of its citizens will get a boost with the launch of the mohalla bus service. Around 280 mini electric mohalla buses, which have been lying idle for eight months, will soon begin operations. The buses were initially proposed by the previous AAP government to improve connectivity in densely populated areas.

Notably, the project was delayed due to a lack of indigenous compliance certificates from the manufacturers. However, the BJP government has now decided to launch the service, which is expected to provide relief to residents.
"With the mohalla bus service, we can expect to see a significant improvement in connectivity and reduced traffic congestion in the city," said a resident of Lajpat Nagar, a densely populated area.
