Preventing Scams: DoT and WhatsApp Join Forces to Safeguard Indian Citizens

Summary: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Meta’s WhatsApp have launched a collaborative campaign, "Scam Se Bacho," to educate the public on how to identify and avoid fake calls and messages, aimed at reducing cyber fraud and digital theft.

Introduction: Cybercrime is a growing concern in India, with numerous cases of financial and emotional harm to individuals. To tackle this issue, the DoT and WhatsApp have initiated a joint campaign to raise awareness about avoiding cybercrime.

Combating Cyber Fraud

  • The "Scam Se Bacho" campaign aims to help individuals identify and evade fake calls and messages, enabling them to better protect themselves from potential scams and digital threats.
  • Through this initiative, the DoT and WhatsApp will collaborate to raise awareness about avoiding cybercrime, leveraging WhatsApp’s extensive digital reach to ensure a safer and more resilient digital environment for all users.

Partnering for a Safer Digital Space

  • The partnership will also facilitate the launch of Train-the-Trainer workshops for officials from the DoT, Sanchar Mitra, telecom operators, and field units to enhance their knowledge on identifying and preventing cyber fraud.
  • The two organizations will also collaborate on the Sanchar Saathi initiative to facilitate timely reporting of fake communications, ensuring a safer digital environment for all.

BSNL’s Subscriber Numbers Take a Hit

  • According to a recent report, BSNL experienced a loss of approximately 322,000 customers in December 2024, attributed to frequent call drops and network issues.
  • Despite this decline, BSNL’s total subscriber count stands at around 91.7 million.

Conclusion: The "Scam Se Bacho" campaign is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of Indian citizens in the digital era. By working together, the DoT and WhatsApp aim to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud and digital threats.
