The Huawei Watch 5 is the company’s latest flagship wearable, offering a plethora of features, improved health monitoring, and exceptional durability. In this review, we delve into the design, display, sensor capabilities, software, and battery life of the Watch 5, providing an in-depth analysis of its performance and functionality. With a starting price of €449 for the 46mm Stainless steel model, the Watch 5 is an attractive option for those seeking a high-end smartwatch.
The Huawei Watch 5 was unveiled at a dedicated press event in Berlin, marking the company’s latest foray into the wearable market. As the current flagship wearable, the Watch 5 is compatible with both iOS and Android, with models featuring eSIM support for phone-free connectivity. With the wearable space reaching maturity, innovation is becoming increasingly rare. However, Huawei has focused on enhancing the health monitoring aspect of the Watch 5, making it a standout feature. We had the opportunity to use the Watch 5 since its launch and are now ready to share our thoughts on its real-life performance.
Design and Display
Our review unit, a 46mm variant, boasts a stunning Purple color scheme, with a titanium case and a matching composite strap. The watch’s sleek design and lightweight construction, weighing only 58 grams, make it an excellent choice for larger wrists. The titanium body is paired with sapphire glass, a premium material in the smartwatch industry, providing exceptional scratch resistance. The dome-shaped screen features a 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 466 x 466 pixel resolution, offering a crisp and vibrant visual experience. The brightness has been improved to 3,000 nits, making it the highest for a Huawei wearable.
X-Tap Sensor and Health Monitoring
One of the Watch 5’s most notable features is the X-Tap sensor, a combination of three sensors that work in tandem to provide accurate health readings. The sensor detects pressure from the fingertip, ECG signals, and changes in blood volume, allowing for a range of health metrics, including heart rate, SpO2, stress, and more. The Health Glance feature enables users to obtain nine health-related readings by pressing the sensor for 60 seconds. This feature is a significant improvement over previous Huawei wearables, making health monitoring more accessible and convenient.
Some key highlights of the X-Tap sensor and Health Glance feature include:
* Nine health-related readings, including heart rate, SpO2, stress, and more
* 60-second measurement time for comprehensive health checks
* Combination of three sensors for accurate readings
* Integration with the Health app for personalized insights and advice
Software and Hardware
The Watch 5 features HarmonyOS 5, offering a range of features, including over 100 sports modes, detailed navigation, and comprehensive ECG and Arterial Stiffness tracking. The wearable also includes eSIM support, allowing for phone-free connectivity, and extensive third-party support. The Gesture Control feature, new to Huawei, enables users to control the watch with simple hand gestures, such as tapping the index finger against the thumb or swiping the thumb across the side of the index finger.
Battery Life
The Watch 5’s battery life is impressive, with a single charge lasting around 100 hours in Standard Mode. Activating the Always-On Display reduces battery life to three days, while switching to Ultra-Saving Battery Life Mode can extend battery life to up to 10 days, albeit with reduced functionality. The watch supports wireless charging, with a 10W fast charging capability that can recharge the battery from 0 to 100% in approximately 90 minutes.
Some key points to consider about the Watch 5’s battery life include:
* Up to 100 hours of battery life in Standard Mode
* Up to 10 days of battery life in Ultra-Saving Battery Life Mode
* 10W fast charging capability
* Wireless charging support
