Google Wallet allows you to add a huge variety of passes and cards to it, making it easy to keep track of all of your things. But you can also make your own passes if you need to. Doing this in Google Wallet isn’t particularly difficult, but it’ll go even faster if you know the steps.
What is a Custom Pass?
We should probably start with what a custom pass is and why you might want to make one in the first place. You see, Google Wallet already lets you add a ton of different things to it: boarding and transit passes, payment cards, IDs, loyalty and gift cards, and more. If you have some sort of document or credential that doesn’t fall into one of the categories Google Wallet already supports, you can try to add it to the app as a custom pass.
So really, it’s just a digitized version of some document or card that Google Wallet doesn’t already have a category for. When you try to make a custom pass, Google Wallet will scan the document and try to determine what it is so it can make relevant artwork for you to see on the app itself. The types of things you might be able to make a custom pass for include insurance cards, event tickets, business cards, or something of that nature.
Just be aware that some items may not be valid in digital form. For example, many states in America do not accept car insurance information or driver’s licenses as custom passes created through Google Wallet. So even though you can make a custom pass of those documents just to have a digital copy, you may still need to have the original copy in your possession when going about your day. For some of these things, Google Wallet will let you know which states do and don’t allow certain custom passes.
How to Create a Custom Pass
The good news is, creating a custom pass on Google Wallet is pretty easy and only requires a few steps. The app will do most everything required itself. Your job is just to use your phone camera to scan the document you want to turn into a custom pass. Once you open the Google Wallet app, you can follow a few simple steps straight from the home screen.
First, tap the “Add to Wallet” button in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then scroll to the bottom of the following screen and select “Everything Else.” This will pull up a viewfinder screen asking you to align your document with the camera so Google Wallet can get a clear picture. When everything is aligned properly, the app will capture the document automatically. Depending on what type of document you are uploading, you may have to take a picture of the back of the item as well.
On the following screen, you’ll be able to crop or rotate the image, or opt to retake it if you aren’t happy with what you have. When you are content with the image, tap “Done.” You will then have to select what type of document you just captured. You will then be able to give the pass a title and a description.
Finally, if you are happy with the end result, you can tap “Add.” If not, you can tap “Edit” to make changes.
Editing a Custom Pass After Creation
Google added the ability to make custom passes in August of last year. Still, they only recently added the option for users to edit custom passes after they had been created, so you no longer have to redo and reupload a custom pass completely if there was something wrong with it. Editing a custom pass is fairly straightforward and only requires a few steps. To start, just tap on the custom pass that you want to edit.
From there, tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the next screen and tap “Edit.” From there, make whatever changes you want. You even have the ability to add completely new information fields, just in case the app missed some important detail while scanning your document, like a line of info on your driver’s license or insurance card. When you are satisfied, you can tap “Save.”
That’s all there is to it. The custom pass will be updated with the new changes right away.
The addition of custom passes to Google Wallet makes it even more useful than it already was, which is saying something. It’s always been a great way to cut down on the thickness of your real-world wallet, but with the ability to add and edit custom passes with ease, there’s almost nothing you can’t digitize and keep a record of. Making custom passes is just one of many of Google Wallet’s best features.
