Did you regret installing the iOS 26 beta or the iPadOS 26 beta? Here’s the step-by-step to downgrade your iPhone or iPad to a previous, non-beta version.
Hopefully, you backed up your device
To uninstall the beta, you’ll need to wipe and restore your device, hopefully from a previous backup.
The good news is that if you don’t have a recent pre-beta backup, the impact of a complete system wipe is less dramatic than it would have been a few years ago, since most apps now store data on the cloud.
Connect your device to your computer, then put your device in recovery mode with these steps:
On an iPad without a Home button: Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button until your iPad begins to restart. If you’re not sure, learn which buttons you need to press to restart your iPad. Continue holding the top button until your iPad goes into recovery mode.
On an iPad with Home button: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don’t release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. Continue to hold both buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.
On an iPhone: Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode screen.
Click the Restore option when it appears. This erases your device and installs the current nonbeta version of iOS or iPadOS. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then repeat step 2.
After the restore finishes, you can set up your device from your archived backup, which must be from an earlier version of iOS or iPadOS.
Important note if you’re also running watchOS 26 on your Apple Watch
Although Apple offers a public beta for the Apple Watch, there still isn’t a way to easily downgrade the device to a previous non-beta version of watchOS.
And since watchOS 26 requires the Apple Watch to be paired with an iPhone running iOS 26, you have three options:
Not wear your Apple Watch until iOS 26 officially comes out in September;
Install the iOS 26 beta again;
Take your Apple Watch in for service, so Apple or an authorized service provider can restore it to a previous watchOS version.
Granted, none of these options are great, but worst-case scenario, September is just around the corner.
