US President Donald Trump has introduced a 25% import tariff on goods from India, a move likely to affect American tech buyers and push up prices across various product categories—including the eagerly awaited iPhone 17. As Apple continues to ramp up iPhone manufacturing in India to diversify away from China, the new trade measure presents a fresh obstacle for the company. Market experts caution that the added import duties may be passed directly onto consumers, potentially turning the iPhone 17 into one of the priciest models ever seen in the United States. The tariff decision also signals growing strain in U.S.-India trade relations, with ripple effects expected across global manufacturing networks.

Apple has shifted 15% of its iPhone manufacturing operations to India, but looming tariffs could still hit the tech giant hard. The company is staring at a steep 54% import duty on products from China—a move that may drive up retail prices sharply.

iPhone 17 Pro Max might carry a hefty price tag

Industry experts suggest that if Apple chooses to transfer the extra costs to buyers, the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max might carry a hefty price tag of around $2,300, or approximately Rs 1.9 lakh in India.

Apple, which has relocated 15% of its iPhone production to India, is likely to be affected by the tariffs. The company faces a 54% duty on Chinese imports, which could lead to a significant increase in prices.

Between March and May, almost all iPhones exported by Foxconn from India were headed to the United States, according to customs data reviewed by Reuters—an indication of Apple’s shifting export strategy to sidestep hefty U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.

The data, disclosed for the first time by Reuters, reveals that Apple has significantly adjusted its India-based shipments to focus almost entirely on meeting U.S. demand. Previously, exports were more evenly distributed across markets such as the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and the UK.

Foxconn dispatched iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India:

From March to May, Foxconn dispatched iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India, with around 97% destined for the U.S.—a sharp jump from the 2024 average of 50.3%, the customs figures show.

In May 2025 alone, shipments to the U.S. were valued at nearly $1 billion, making it the second-highest monthly total ever, trailing only March’s record $1.3 billion.
