Today Majin Bu shared a rumor about two big productivity upgrades coming to iPadOS 19 this year. But per Bu’s source, iOS 19 will make your iPhone far more powerful too, particularly when connected to an external display.

iPhones with USB-C gaining big external display upgrade in iOS 19

Majin Bu writes on his website:

iOS 19 isn’t being left behind. Source say[s] iPhones with USB-C will support external displays, offering a Stage Manager like interface. While not a full desktop mode, it will allow users to extend their screen space, great for presentations, editing, or enhanced viewing.

This kind of power will be a first for the iPhone.

Currently, while connecting the iPhone to an external display is supported, it only enables basic mirroring functionality.

But to get a Stage Manager-style experience, presumably with multiple apps visible at once, would be a huge change.

The timing is also convenient, with a new Apple Studio Display reportedly on its way shortly after iOS 19 launches.

9to5Mac’s Take

I wonder if this Stage Manager-like feature in iOS 19 will serve as a precursor of sorts to proper multitasking coming to next year’s iPhone Fold.

Offering the functionality only when an external display is connected will be nice, but likely remain very niche among users.

But it could lay the groundwork for a more mainstream feature on the iPhone Fold’s large internal display.

What do you think of iOS 19 getting upgraded external display support, with some form of Stage Manager? Let us know in the comments.
