Kangana Ranaut Inspects Flood-Affected Areas in Himachal Pradesh, Claims Limited Power as MP
BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut visited flood-affected areas in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, stating that while she has limited power as an MP, she is working to secure financial assistance from the Centre for disaster relief. Ranaut criticized the Congress government in the state for not providing adequate relief to those affected by the cloudbursts and floods.
The recent floods in Himachal Pradesh have brought the state to a standstill, with 14 people dead and 31 missing in Mandi district alone. The disaster has caused widespread destruction, with over 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, and 31 vehicles damaged. BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut visited the affected areas on Sunday, surveying the damage and interacting with locals. Ranaut, who represents Mandi in the Lok Sabha, acknowledged that as an MP, her power is limited, but she is working to secure financial assistance from the Centre to aid in the relief efforts.
MP’s Role in Disaster Relief
Ranaut emphasized that while she does not have the authority to allocate funds for disaster relief, she can facilitate the process of securing assistance from the Centre. “I do not have any funds for disaster relief or hold any Cabinet post. MPs have work that was limited to Parliament. We are very small in the scheme of things. But, I can help to get disaster funds from the Centre,” she told news agency ANI. Ranaut also stated that the Centre has provided immediate relief operations by sending in forces to the affected areas.
Criticism of State Government
The BJP MP was critical of the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, accusing them of not providing adequate relief to those affected by the floods. “People who are responsible are hiding their faces. They are doing corruption. Central funds will come to them and not me or Jairam Thakur. I do have some capacity in policymaking, but it is very less on the state level or even panchayat level,” Ranaut said. She also claimed that the Congress party will not come to power in the state for the next 20 years due to their handling of the flood situation.
Some key highlights of the situation include:
* 14 people have died in Mandi district, with 31 still missing
* Over 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, and 31 vehicles have been damaged
* 164 cattle have perished, and 200 roads have been rendered impassable
* 236 transformers and 278 supply schemes have been disrupted in Mandi district
Ranaut’s visit to the affected areas came in the wake of criticism from the Congress over her absence from her Lok Sabha constituency. Her party colleague and Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur had earlier stated, “We are concerned about the locals, we live and die for them. Cannot comment on those who are not.” However, Ranaut asserted that she is accessible and is working to bring relief to the affected families.
Centre’s Response to the Crisis
The Centre has provided immediate relief operations by sending in forces to the affected areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a five-nation tour, has been informed of the situation. Ranaut stated that as an MP, it is her job to bring in funds and convey the ground reality to the government. She also said that the Centre will provide financial assistance to the state to aid in the relief efforts.
Long-Term Solutions
The floods in Himachal Pradesh have highlighted the need for long-term solutions to prevent such disasters in the future. Ranaut emphasized the importance of policymakers working together to find solutions to the state’s flood problems. “How the state government is functioning. I can say that Congress will not come to power in the state for the next 20 years,” she claimed.
In conclusion, Kangana Ranaut’s visit to the flood-affected areas in Himachal Pradesh has brought attention to the need for immediate relief and long-term solutions to prevent such disasters in the future. While the Centre has provided immediate relief operations, the state government has been criticized for its handling of the situation. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for policymakers to work together to find solutions to the state’s flood problems.
